Soundpainting is the universal live composing sign language created by New York composer Walter Thompson for musicians, dancers, actors, poets, and visual artists working in the medium of structured improvisation. In a Soundpainting ensemble, the “Soundpainter” (i.e. composer/director) uses this sign language to indicate what type of response he or she desires from the performers. Using the Soundpainting sign language, an entire concert, theater work, dance piece, film score, or educational presentation can be realized spontaneously.
Soundpainting engages students of all ages, ability levels, and art forms in a hands-on, participatory event utilizing multiple learning styles (verbal, visual, aural, and kinesthetic). Soundpainting develops the creative voices of students through an array of structural and stylistic parameters drawn from different cultures and historical periods. The Soundpainter as teacher draws out and constructively develops the innate creativity of students through his/her gestural choices, empowering each group to explore the creative process in an experiential learning format.
The basic 50 gestures, which can be learned in 2-3 sessions, yield countless combinations that offer ensemble participants creative choices within a structured framework. Evan Mazunik is available to engage with your students in a variety of formats which can be customized to meet your curriculum needs, from performance and discussion to interactive workshops.
