Tumbleweed

i.
Dusty traveler
Blown in with the spring air
Through open windows
..
My heart embraces only those
Who leave
..
ii.
My tumbleweed—
For a moment
You’re blown back home
I wash your dusty feet
Memorizing calluses
And we split a pint of Rocky Road
Talk of nothing
Listening to the sound of our voices
mixing with the radio
..
I remember watching you fall
onto the bed, asleep.
And then there are only
The sounds of morning,
Wrinkled sheets,
And the left-behind smell of your shampoo
..

Flowers came

Flowers came
Today.
..
They weren’t
From you.
..
I spent my evening
Crushing petals
Gradually.

Artichoke Hearts

I eat artichoke hearts
And think of you
Bite cleanly through the marinated flesh
Light olive green
And layered
Like the little nesting Russian dolls
That swallow their younger siblings
Doll in doll in doll
..
I bite
and slowly chew
Imagine it’s your heart
I’m growing fat on
You
I’m nesting inside me
Brooding over you
Until you hatch
..
And I imagine you
Sending me
Not roses but
These green vegetables.

Sunday Songs: Pentecost 9

With All My Heart I’ll Praise Thy Name

Love is Patient

Love is patient.
I, however, live in New York.
And when I stand in line
at the Duane Reade
waiting for the one cashier,
who plods through her tasks
with glacial ineptitude,
there is a gnashing of teeth
(mine),
and heavy sighing (also mine),
as I imagine writing a scathing
letter to the management,
pointing out, in carefully chosen words,
the folly of a strategy
that places only one incompetent cashier
at the front,
while minions of idle clerks
wander the purgatory of aisles
in vague oblivion.

My very own ISBN

I’m now the proud owner of my very own ISBN for my book of poetry Keeping Records.  And in just a few more weeks, the book should be available for sale on Amazon.

In celebration of these steps, I thought I’d post some of the poems from this collection, starting with the title poem.

Keeping Records

Love keeps no record of wrongs,
But it sure as heck
keeps records of Billie Holiday
and Nat King Cole,
Tony Bennett
and Doc Severinsen’s orchestra
playing “A Night in Tunisia”
with Dizzy wailing way up high.

Love keeps records
of Al Hirt
and Frank Sinatra,
who’s telling me Nice & Easy does it,
Fools Rush In, &
Try a Little Tenderness,

in tattered album
jackets,
waiting,
to give their grooves
to the needle.
